Iran, located in the Middle East and officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran, was known as Persia until 1935. The economy of Iran is highly reliant on the oil sector. The state controls most economic activity. Private sector is involved in small-scale workshops, farming, and services. Iran has the second largest natural gas reserves and also the second largest oil reserves in the world. Iran's main industries include: car manufacturing, agriculture, food processing, artisan goods, petroleum, petrochemicals, utilities, construction, minerals, metallurgy, telecom, pharmaceuticals, textiles, construction materials, armaments and electronics.
