Portugal, located in Southwestern Europe, is officially known as the Portuguese Republic. The country joined the European Union in the 80s. The economy of Portugal is mainly based on services and industry such as software and automotive. Therefore, it has significantly improved its performance in the automotive, mold-making and software sectors. Portugal's chief industries are oil refineries, pulp and paper industry, automotive, cement production, textile, footwear, furniture, and cork (of which the country stands as the leading producer in the world). Tourism plays a significant role in Portugal's economy.
